You are in the middle of what had been an old agricultural property, of about 40 hectares of surface, that is, about 56 football fields. The estate was divided by the road to L'Hospitalet.

One part corresponded more or less to what is now Can Mercader Park and included the owners' home with a garden around it, the lands worked by the tenant farmers, and some leased plots. The other part extended through the current Almeda neighborhood, on the other side of the road.

Before the palace, in this very place, there was an old farmhouse known as Mas Oriol del Empedrat. In the mid-18th century, Josep Sadurní, a rich merchant from Barcelona, bought the farmhouse and the estate, which passed to his daughter Maria Sadurní as universal heir.

In 1864, one hundred years after Maria Sadurní's wedding, her great-grandson, Joaquim de Mercader i Belloch, had the farmhouse demolished to build this palace. In 1900, they were forced to sell their Barcelona properties and move their main residence to the Cornellà palace.
